am I normal or what?

There’s something that has been bugging me for a few days. Something that I want to clarify with the public. But before that, let me explain what is this all about first.

You see, there has been some major renovation going on at my workplace. A few days ago, the contractors started painting the place up. Like, major paint up kind of business. As a result of that, the whole place smelled like paint thinner. The smell would penetrate through walls and no matter where you go, you’ll catch it. And for these few days, I’ve been happy… because I really liked the smell. (if you don’t know how paint thinner smelled like, it’s almost the same as your mom’s/girlfriend’s nail polisher. Go whiff it to get an idea).

But ironically, not everyone likes the smell. The operators would cover their nose everywhere they go… and my colleague BigSnake would rant “IT FUCKING STINKS IN HERE!!”. Tell me something but I know what really stinks… but definitely not this. You know what stinks? Leftover garbage. Wet dogs. Rotten eggs. A baby’s poo. Farts. Banglas. Those stuffs stink. But this? Not this. At least not for me. I think the smell of paint thinner is rather pleasant to our olfactory senses. So does petrol, chloroform, glue… you know, stuffs like that.

(I know junkies love to whiff glue and paint thinners, but I’m talking about the smell as itself, not the pleasure of indulging in them as stimulating agents.)

So, am I normal or what? Any of you people out there likes the smell of paint thinner (or nail polisher) like I do? I need to know if it’s only me or something. (I know a couple of friends who share the same opinion, but I need to poll from a larger and wider scope of people understand this).

    Love it.Love it.Love it.
I’ll purposely leave the door open when i pump petrol so that the smell will linger into my car and gets absorbed to the seats.

    Neat.

I like the smell of paint thinner, but I can’t really take nail polisher at near because the smell is too strong for me. But for newly painted wall, yeah, I like the smell.

I don’t like the smell of petrol products or alcohol or ketones, etc coz they make me dizzy. But I don’t hate them as much as I hate nausea inducing smells like rotting garbage and the items that you mentioned (wet dogs, shit, etc).

I love the smell of petrol and thinner. Used to be a plastic modeller and smell a heck lot of them in my room as thinner is part of the material for Tamiya paint.

Am not bothered by the petrol smell but once because overly-indulge I put my nose very near to the hose of the petrol nozzle (was curious with the evaporating petrol at that time), ended up felt like choking…

Anyway I think this chemical turns certain people on and vice versa, no biggie.

And ohhh somebody mentioned furnituressss… I have to say that shellac varnish takes the cake when it comes to strong smell. Niceee…

malcolm - Engine oil? errrrr… you sure?

nic - Yeah, we’re normal after all.

adam - kawan, plumbum tu adalah logam berat lar. Depa tak boleh terbang. Otak abang michael takkan sewel, unless abang michael pergi menjilat cat yang basah tu haa…

swallow / titu / MJ - tobacco? beer? freshly cut grass? Now this is getting weird. (beer actually smells like cockroach… they only taste nice)

ben-G - I’ve had a part time job as a cobbler assistant before. Those glue are awesome. Ahaks!

zero - That means you’re normal. Good to know that dude.

MxMw - Yeah, and I also happen to be a hot stud with a dick full of diamonds.

anas - Errrmmm, itu bukan fetish lah, adik. Itu adalah ‘feel good’. Rasa syok.

burpsi - Petrol contains benzene. A known carcinogen (cancer causing substance). Although I like petrol smell, but I try my best to stay the fuck out of the way when I refuel my car.

sasha - Some new leather shoes can smell pretty nasty. But most of them do smell nice.

    MxMw - Hmmmmmm… I didn’t know tyres smell nice…

maemee - I don’t know about sticker but, the smell of a new car has always been a turn on! Especially if the car’s with leather interior! Damn!

adam - yaler, kalau abang michael yang dikatakan sewel tu… membelog topik sewel… dan adam yang tak reti eja ‘rempit’ tu… kerap datang balik baca sambil berkomen… kenapa ha? terencat? Ahakhaks… (that’s why you didn’t get it when I said “lead as heavy metal won’t flyyyyyy through the air by itself”…)

malcolm - Not all of them. Some dino oils can smell really bad.

I like the whiff of (sticky) glue and petrol and shellac one wor… As for paint, nowadays they don’t smell as “nice” as how it used to be. Improved paint, they call it. Varnish ah? All women also can take it one ler… especially those who paint their nails. What else is nice? How about fart? It’s gas too. :)

Does the smell of ink or new paper count? Or new books?
Don’t remember how thinner smells. The next time I come across a bottle, will let you know if I’m normal or not.
I do like the smell of a new fifty ringgit note… ahhhh…. ectasy….

Well, your nose is pretty damn normal, to say the least. I think reactions to various paints depend on how you grew up with the smells. Some of ym friends, when they first smelt thinner [or thinner-like smells] they go eh, whats this?

I kinda noticed, that when people around them go ’shit, this stinks!’ they repeat the same reaction.

Also, another guy, when being next to another peson that goes ‘Ah…fresh paint.’ ends up reacting the same way.

I suppose it’s a ‘monkey see, monkey do’ kinda thing. But personally speaking, I love the smell of freshly printed ringgit notes. *snifffff* Ohhhh….yeah.

    You are completely normal :)

All my siblings and I love the smell of thinner, glue, paints since we were young…..
    hehehehe…bordering on inhalant-abuse?

My mom told us that we’d become stupid if we continue lingering around the newly-painted rooms or sniffing the glue while using it for art classes, so we stopped. :(

  • March 20th, 2007, 2:07 pm | #

Hell, I love the smell man. The smell would at least eradicate most of the airborne viruses like fire through the wood. God damn I loved that smell.
